Summer Intern McKenzie Rodriguez week 9

August 10, 2021 by virginia.moerbe

Howdy!

This week at the Stiles Farm, I helped to finish up loading and moving the round bales to multiple locations around the farm. This was good preparation for the winter since the cows will need lots of hay to keep them warm during the colder months. We also continued working on the old Chevy truck. The first task we began on was removing the fuel pump from the engine. It was fun getting to learn more about the truck and what the fuel pump does. Lastly, we ended the week by relocating the chickens to a new chicken coop.

Howdy,

This week at the Stiles Farm I got to work on repairs for the tractors. It was super interesting to learn more about how the engine works and the different functions every part performs to make the tractor run efficiently. Throughout the week I additionally touched up and painted the smaller barns at the front of the farm and repaired some fencing damage in the cow pastures. With all the recent rain the cows have been more active.

Howdy!

These last couple weeks at the Stiles Farm Foundation have been busy and fun! Before field day we were hard at work maintaining the lawn at the front of the farm. I finished the flower beds and added several loads of mulch to them to help the plants grow and stay healthy. The field day event here at the farm was a huge success with a great turn out in people interested in learning more about our farm and what we do. We had several stations and guest speakers come to assist in our field day event. This week we have b egun fixing fences and checking on the cows to make sure they are handling the high temperatures and heat well. Later this week we will begin loading and moving the round hay bales that have just been cut.

McKenzie Summer Intern Week 1

June 7, 2021 by virginia.moerbe

Week 1

Hey there!
It has been a busy first week here on the Stiles Farm. I came into the internship position not knowing much about farming and ranching, but just within this week I have learned a significant amount of knowledge about the farm and how it runs. I have been learning and following along with Nathan, the farm assistant, who has shown me the ropes on how to do many tasks here on the farm. I have already learned how to drive one of the tractors and how to properly fix fences.
This week we mostly spent checking fence lines and ensuring that the cows were safely in the correct pastures. The recent storms have done some damage to the fences so we went and fixed up the parts of the barbed wire fence that needed straightening and patching. We additionally moved cows this week with the help of the cowboys. During this process we worked with the cows, making sure they each had ear tags, vaccinations, and that the males were castrated. The cows were then loaded and placed into a new pasture. Overall this week has been so much fun and I’ve already had many great experiences here at Stiles Farm.

Summer Intern McKenzie -Week 2

June 7, 2021 by virginia.moerbe

Howdy!

Week two on the Stiles Farm has been filled with lots more learning experiences and getting ready for the farms big field day. This week I have helped prep the front entrance and area of the farm for field day, although the rain and bad weather has been holding up a few of our projects for the week. In between thunderstorms I was able to learn how to use the weed eater and how to do maintenance on it. I also went with Mr. Collett to pick out some flowers and trees for landscaping the front of the farm. I just finished planting them today and the property is already starting to look great. We are going to pick up some mulch in the next couple of days to finish the gardening project! Our other projects for field day will continue on throughout next week. I additionally checked in on the cows a few times throughout the week ensuring they had enough grazing food and water. With the temperatures warming up we will have to make sure that the herd has plenty drink.
